Poem for Derek Mahon
Renowned Irish poet, Derek Mahon, died on October 1st 2020, during the second Covid lockdown.
A week later, I visited Kinsale where he had lived for many years, and I sat down by the harbour thinking of all the sublime, well-crafted, late poems he had defiantly written against the clock. Then I wrote this elegy for him.
It’s called The Last Summit.

Last autumn I was standing at my window, watching parents walking their kids to school, and one woman and her daughter really caught my eye, because it was such a cold, dark morning. So I went back to my desk near the heater and I wrote this poem for them.
It’s called Before the Onslaught, and it’s featured in Southward 43, which launches in Waterstones on February 2nd.
